What is MATHCOUNTS?
Mathcounts is a nationwide program designed to increase students' interest and ability in mathematics and to heighten awareness of the importance of math.
Through coaching, competition and peer recognition, Mathcounts helps students develop math skills that are the basis for success in our technological world. More young people must become proficient in math if this country is to meet the increasing need for technically trained personnel.
Mathcounts impacts these student "Mathletes" at an age when they are forming attitudes about math and technology; when they can still elect to take college math courses in high school to prepare them for the future math careers.
The program builds skills, promotes strategic problem-solving and drills students in dealing with complex problems and hard-to-handle numbers. And it provides an opportunity to bring 7th and 8th graders together to prompt lively exchange of mathematical ideas through competition.
Our young people
are counting on us.
MATHCOUNTS is counting on you.

How does
MATHCOUNTS work?
Mathcounts creates interest among students using the same principles as an athletic program; training, advanced levels of competitions, immediate rewards and peer recognition.
The competition phase of Mathcounts begins in thousands of schools across the country in the form of a qualifying test. Students are coached in everything from the basic arithmetic skills to math logic, probability and statistics, linear algebra and polynomials.
Between September and the national competition in May, students and teachers work together in quizzes and drills to develop teamwork and skill. They are then ready to advance to the national contest in Washington, D.C.
Funding MATHCOUNTS
& How You Can Help
NeSPE has created an Education Foundation which is funding the Mathcounts program. The Foundation has reached the $100,000 Fund Raising Goal that was originally thought to be sufficient to endow the fund. However, because of lower interest rates and higher than forecast expenses, this amount is not adequate to meet the current financial demands of our Mathcounts program.
You or your firm can help us to meet the challenge of these changing conditions and ensure the ongoing viability of our Mathcounts program by making a new pledge or a one-time contribution. If you are unable to pledge or contribute at this time, but could make your friends, colleagues, or associates aware that because some companies have expressed concerns about donating to an endowment fund, we have divided the fund into an endowment account and an operating account that supports current expenses.
Please contact any member of the Board or the Fund Raising Committee for more information or questions.
